Long Description
Choosing your life
and how that made you into someone who now often finds it easy
to explain your gender by saying you are happiest on the road, when you're not here or there, but in-between,
that yellow line running down the center of it all like a goddamn sunbeam.
Your name is not a song you will sing under your breath. Your pronouns haven't even been invented yet.
You're going to shave your head and drive through Texas.
You're going to kill your own god so you can fall in love for the first time.
They're going to keep telling you your heartbeat is a preexisting condition.
They're going to keep telling you you are a crime of nature.
And you're going to look at all of your options and choose conviction.
Choose to carve your own heart out of the side of a cliff.
Choose to spend your whole life telling secrets you owe no one to everyone, 'til there isn't anyone who can insult you
by calling you what you are: you holy blinking star.
Yellow Lines is a LARP about transitional spaces, set in the real world with some small magics, and is designed to center non-binary and transgender archetypes and experiences. The majority of characters are explicitly non-binary, and all characters are transgender and queer. It is also a game about love and loss, pain and heartbreak, and laughter and trans joy. Anyone, including cisgender folk, are welcome to play - however you should be ready to play a character who carries their transness or non-binariness within and close to their heart.
You each drove down the highway, rain pouring down from the skies, shattering booms echoing over the music in your car. Eventually, the storm grew to be too much and you had to pull over to a little rest stop on Route-84 East.
On this Earth, when you are in a place of transition at a time so liminal and between as sunset, when something transitional like a storm is blowing through, the gates between worlds soften here, the world outside compensates. As that veil lifted, the rest stop found itself cut off from the rest of the world, where it would stay until sunrise.
And so, you each made your way into the small little diner at the rest stop. It was closed for the evening already, but the proprietors of such establishments often leave water or a pot of coffee on for people who end up stuck for the night.
Now, thereโs also this less known fact about this world - not only do places and times that are in between or in transitional periods have power, but so do people. When 12 such individuals find themselves inexplicably stuck together during this confluence of events, with history and pain and joy and laughter between them, there will be drama and history, secrets will be revealed, and hearts will be broken - or healed.
What to expect from this game:
- During Yellow Lines, 12 characters who are all connected to each other find themselves caught in a rest stop overnight. The game will take place in three stages.
- The first stage, or Sunset, will involve the meetings - some of these characters have never met, and others may have not seen each other in many many years. Expect this to be lower drama.
- The second stage, or Midnight, is when old wounds will resurface, old drama will flare up, and secrets will be revealed. Expect lots of drama, some arguments, and some intense feelings.
- The third stage, or Sunrise, is the closing of the LARP. Expect to see the drama close - or sit as hurt unaddressed. This is when final decisions are made, and characters make decisions which will shape the trajectory of their life.
- Yellow Lines is also a high workshopping game. Expect abount an hour of workshopping to go over safety tools, build character relationships, and debrief after the game.
This LARP was written out of a desire to have more transgender/non-binary/queer first LARPs, especially with a focus on spirituality, personal power, activism, and growth. Cisgender folks are super welcome to play, with the understanding that their characters are likely going to be some degree of transgender or non-binary. There are no pronoun restrictions/required pronouns.
