The Hour of the Pearl

by Julia Nelson and Rhys Allen

In the aftermath of the Catastrophe, magical servants of the Mountain and the Sea gather with Humans to embark on a quest to find the Crones of the two realms and restore prosperity to the land.

The Hour of the Pearl is a 4-hour long litform boffer larp for 15 PCs.

Long Description

Two sovereigns of mountain and sea. Where they came from or truly what they are is lost to time. Children of air and fire, they wandered the land for centuries before finally settling in their own realms: one in the Sea, and one in the Mountains. Each Crone ruled in their separate domain, emerging only once a year for their Reunion at the Sacred Shore, a place of powerful wild magic. While the siblings converse, their sprites and servants celebrate through the night. The surge of mystical energy in this place and time is unparallelled in the known universe. Miracles may happen. Or… disaster.

No one knows the cause of the Catastrophe. All that is certain is that during the last Reunion a massive hurricane blew in from the sea, crashing tidal waves onto the shore. A tremendous earthquake rocked the land, and the sacred meeting place was cracked asunder. Since then the seas have been stormy and unsettled, and the mountains have had tremors and avalanches. Life for human and magical creatures alike has been disrupted and times are hard now.

It is nearly time once again for the Reunion, and new information has come to light which may point the way to find the Crones and seek their help. Representatives have been chosen from both the human villages and towns and the magical creatures who are Servants of the Mountain and the Sea. Perhaps, if this group can meet the challenges laid before them, they can find a way to restore the balance and return prosperity and hope to the land.

This is a 4-hour larp that uses boffer weapons for combat resolution. Players will be expected to engage in both puzzle and boffer combat challenges. A detailed player survey will be sent in advance of the game to gather player input with respect to their character and gameplay preferences. All characters are written as gender-neutral and while romance is a minor and optional component of this game, anyone interested in romantic relationship ties should be prepared to have those to characters of any gender identity.

This larp strives for a high level of “What You See Is What You Get” where the play area is transformed through set dressing, lighting, and sound effects. Players will be encouraged to interact with the environment as part of play. The environment will at times be dark (light will be provided to assist players in reading In Game materials), loud (music or sound effects), and physically constrained by game mechanics (rules that disallow movement past certain points or fast movement.)

Pre-Game reading will involve a Character Sheet (1 page), Relationship Prompts (1-2 pages), Character Stats (.5-1 page) and World Setting document (3 pages). In-Game reading will consist of item and location tags in large print (18-pt or larger), no longer than 1 page.

A reduced version of the Accelerant ruleset will be used. Familiarity with lightest-touch boffer combat systems is encouraged but not required. Combat styles will be customized to the needs of players. Weapons will be provided for anyone who cannot provide their own. We strongly encourage anyone who wishes to play but has concerns about physical accommodations to contact us with questions.

For NPC sign-ups, a familiarity with lightest-touch boffer combat systems is strongly encouraged. We have a few non-combat NPC roles, but the majority of NPC activity will be melee combat roles with little to no roleplay.
