Wolf By The Ears: A Deep Blue Sea Story

by Dave Kapell, Larisa Allen, Julia Nelson and Thom Hansen

It is 1756, and the wars between the squabbling powers of Europe have brought all-too-human horrors to the land, but now something darker threatens the cycles of life and death. Only those accustomed to walking the lines of myth and reality, delving the essence of nature, will be able to defeat this corruption.

A Wolf by the Ears: A Deep Blue Sea Story is a supernatural pulp adventure in the form of a boffer larp, set over several scenes that span the length of the Danube River from its headwaters in the Black Forest to its sprawling mouth at the Black Sea. It is inspired by European mythos, by stories of witchcraft and monsters, and by Gothic horror.

Long Description

Something dark is gathering at the river's mouth. For countless years, it has stalked across Europe, driving nations to war, neighbors against each other. The people huddle in their wind-swept homes by the fires that never seem to do enough to hold back the cold. The guardian of the Danube delta has pushed her way upstream, in search of answers and help from deep in the Black Forest where the sacred springs that feed the river lie.

It is 1758, and the wars between the squabbling powers of Europe have brought all-too-human horrors to the land, but now something darker threatens the cycles of life and death. Only those accustomed to walking the lines of myth and reality, delving the essence of nature, will be able to defeat this corruption.

Wolf by the Ears: A Deep Blue Sea Story is a supernatural pulp adventure told over several scenes that span the length of the Danube River from its headwaters in the Black Forest to its sprawling mouth at the Black Sea. It is inspired by European mythos, by stories of witchcraft and monsters, and by Gothic horror. Players will take on the roles of a traveling group of strange companions, some of whom are stranger than others. Many characters will be in situations where they will be unable to fully resolve their personal problems within the story of this larp, due to the episodic, pulp, nature of the story.

This is not a sequel to Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, and no knowledge of that game will be required. It is a spiritual successor, with similar design aesthetics and intent.

This is a 4-hour boffer larp with roleplay, puzzle, and combat challenge elements. This larp strives for a high level of โ€œWhat You See Is What You Getโ€ where the play area is transformed through set dressing, lighting, and soundscapes, and players will be encouraged to interact with the environment as part of play. That environment will at times be dark (light will be provided to assist players in reading In Game materials), loud (music or sound effects), and physically constrained by game mechanics (rules that disallow movement past certain points or fast movement.)

While this event does use binary-gendered buckets for signups, there are genderfluid and trans characters in the game, and more preferences will be gathered during the casting process.

A simplified version of the Accelerant ruleset will be used and can be reviewed at this link. This game is intended for people who are experienced with the Accelerant system, but familiarity is not required, and a briefing can be provided at the start of game if needed. We will ask you about your comfort with combat during the survey and a variety of combat styles and roles will be available (melee weapons, packets, healing, etc.) Weapons will be provided for anyone who cannot provide their own. We strongly encourage anyone who wishes to play but has concerns about physical accommodations to contact us with questions.

For NPC sign-ups, a familiarity with lightest-touch boffer combat systems is strongly encouraged. NPCs will have some roleplay roles although are focused on combat though much of the game.

Please review our (Social Contract) (link tbd) prior to signing up for this LARP to ensure that you are comfortable with our design goals regarding genre themes, gender, sexuality, cultural appreciation and appropriation, and additional content warnings. A pre-casting player survey will be sent in advance of casting to gather player input with respect to their character and gameplay preferences.
