Long Description
Pokemon UN: Another Legendary Bird has hit the Burnt Tower.
There's a crisis in the Pokemon world. Play as a gym leader, professor, elite four champions, or member of one of any number of other organizations as they come together to debate the finer points of politics, policy, and international relations that rarely take center stage in video games.
This game is a Model UN, set in the Pokemon world. Players will be given a brief describing the situation and a character that they will be portraying for the game (character sheets are about 1-2 pages long.) We will be using an abbreviated form of UN parliamentary procedure as the rules system. We will also use Discord during the game as a stand-in for social media interaction.
Tone: This is a silly game about serious topics. This scenario in particular, touches upon colonialism, war, chemical weapons, terrorism, late-stage capitalism, religious fundamentalism, nuclear warfare and ethics of genetic modification. While the characters are expected to have outlandish, silly and unexpected reactions to what is going on, we want to warn players ahead of time: comedy and horror are often two sides of the same coin, and this scenario skews darker as layers of Pokemon obfuscation are pulled away, revealing deadly serious topics at the core of the game.
Knowledge of Pokemon: You donβt need to be a Pokemon expert to play in this game. The characters, while based on characters in the show, are easy to understand. A basic understanding of what a Pokemon is will help you navigate the game, but the game is designed to be played by people who are only somewhat familiar with the property.
Scenario: Following a famine, a war has broken out between the superpowers of Kanto and Johto over control of the food rich Orange Islands. What started as a proxy war on the islands, has quickly spiraled into an all out conflict in which both nations are currently deploying legendary pokemon, in a move that is shocking to the international community as a whole. This came to a head when someone interacted with the legendary Ho-Oh, causing it to erupt in a ball of flame that snuffed out the lives of thousands in an instant. In the fallout, the land has been left uninhabitable due to the sheer number of violent rampaging ghost-types that now haunt the area. Before another great tragedy can occur, a meeting of the Pokemon Indigo Council (UN) is called.
Casting: I will send out the character list sometime in December/January along with a brief casting questionairre. Character sheets are between 1-2 pages. with an additional 1-2 pages of setting information, and about 4 pages of UN voting procedures (all of which will be summarized before game.)
Discord Functionality A Discord server will serve as the in-game social media site "Blue Pidgey," that players can use to interact with the "public" (who are watching the proceedings.) Players can also use it to send messages to the out of character crisis moderator. This isn't required to play the game, but having discord active on your phone will enhance the experience. Players without discord will be able to pass notes the traditional way, with pen and paper.
