Long Description
This game is a comedy LARP about gender essentialism, heterosexism, family dynamics, and the rigidity of gender expectations. In The Straights Are Not Okay, you will play a group of people at a gender reveal party in a national forest. Nominally, party attendees are there to support the expectant parents, but during play you will use the occasion to vent frustrations and resentments with other party guests in the pettiest, most passive-aggressive manner possible. The game will end when the gender reveal goes hilariously wrong and the party-goers burn down the forest.
This game appears to be about the ridiculousness of gender reveal parties, but at its core, it is really about navigating difficult family dynamics. The difference between the true self and the role people play for their families who expect conformity to societal norms is examined, as well as the various strategies people employ to manage that gap.
Players will need to bring their own timer that can be set for anywhere from 10 - 55 minutes. A timer on a phone works great.
