Duck Stamp

by Ryan Hart

Each year, the Federal Duck Stamp competition determines whose work will grace a $1 hunting permit, and tonight, the panel of philatelic authorities is about to announce their decision. A comedy in the style of "Waiting For Guffman" about people who paint ducks and the people judge them for it.

Long Description

The first Federal Duck Stamp was designed by Jay "Ding" Darling in 1934 at the behest of President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt, and was, for fifteen years, the exclusive province of elite waterfowl oil painters. Then, in 1949, the most democratic of American art institutions was established, allowing anyone who dare pick up brush and canvas to submit their vision for the Federal Duck Stamp and join the august company of artists immortalized by the $1 hunting permit. Each year, an august panel of noted art, waterfowl, and philatelic authorities is appointed by the Secretary of the Interior to judge each competition, and thousands of aspirants submit a single entry. And this year, we're down to the final half dozen.

Welcome to the 2025 Federal Duck Stamp Finalist Dinner [1]. May the odds be in your favor.

"Duck Stamp" is a comedy in the style of "Waiting For Guffman" or "Best In Show" of the six people or so who might win this year's competition, and the three people who are going to judge them. Friends will become enemies, enemies will become friends, families will be sundered and someone is likely to fall in love. But one thing is certain. A Duck Stamp will be chosen.

The designer of "Duck Stamp" wishes to make sure you know three things about this larp: 1. There's no preparation or reading required. We'll do an in-role onboarding to introduce you to the characters and how to play. Don't sweat it too much. This is a comedy. 2. If you were to do one thing to prepare for this larp, it would be to watch "Best In Show" or "Waiting For Guffman" or any Christopher Guest movie. If you were to do two things to prepare for this larp, it would be to watch another Christopher Guest movie. If you were to do three things to prepare for this larp, you would be quite overprepared. Maybe you want to run it? 3. If you are familiar with the Federal Duck Stamp competion, good for you, because this larp is about as historically accurate as your typical Ren Faire.
