Long Description

A Message from the Horizon Convention Planning Committee

Hello! It's that time of year again. We're proud to announce that this year's Horizon Convention is right around the corner, and it's looking to be better than ever! We've improved our registration procedures, doubled our security detail to prevent more magical wards getting set up that would keep our guests out, and even exorcised that one evil spirit who's been bothering attendees for years. Not only that, but our lineup of Keynote speakers this year has a lot of experts ready to talk about today's important issues for our community.

And of course, as usual, the appointment process for the leaders of our community will take place. While we encourage people to take on these positions for the sake of helping out their fellow community members and representing the best interests of supernatural beings everywhere, it is also worth noting that the position comes with an infusion of magical power, which usually serves as a strong incentive! If you're interested in applying for one of the three positions, or in serving on the selection committee, you can find the details below. We hope to see you soon for this year's convention!

LARP Information

Overview

Horizon is a LARP about a convention held for supernatural beings of all types, and about the selection process they're holding for who will become their leaders. The LARP focuses on the selection committee for these leaders, the process of appointing those leaders, and all of the drama that comes from putting vampires, dryads, old gods, and the occasional ooze in a room together and trying to get them to agree on something. While others might be having fun reconnecting with people they don't normally see during this convention, this group is focused on their task, and will be going through a number of conversations and activities to make it happen.

Structure

Mechanics: Horizon will take place as a single, uninterrupted scene. The GM will be present as a Helper Player Character (HPC), who will have some involvement in guiding game flow but none in influencing character actions or resolving character conflicts. Conflict and plot in this game is resolved through in-character actions, in-character conversation, or the promise of following through on things “off screen” after the game concludes. There are no out-of-character mechanics in this game.

Tone: Horizon is a game that mixes high-stakes drama and low-stakes hilarity. You might go from ridiculous icebreakers that cause an absurd debate to a heartfelt moment to high-tension drama. Tone for individual characters can be calibrated to player preferences, though all players should expect at least some amount of drama.

Details

Timing: Horizon is a three-hour game, with half an hour of buffer on either end for pre-game announcements and post-game debrief.

Costuming: Costuming is encouraged but not required. A short blurb about costuming will be sent to participants, but it generally follows modern era clothing standards.

Gender/Pronouns: Players will pick their character’s pronouns and presentation. While some supernatural beings (e.g. mermaids) may be historically associated with certain genders and/or gendered expectations, this game happily takes the opportunity to ignore such things when it seems fun. This game is open to all players and any gender that they may wish to play.
