On Dancefloors

by Santo Sengupta, Kristen Patten and Ted Marr

On Dancefloors is a workshopped game about the transformative power of dancing. Players are Choreomancers - magical adepts who channel the power of dance, music, crowd and spectacles. Harnessing their intention, attention, and all powerful dance moves, Choreomancers seek to tap into the primal rhythms of reality for their own ends. Some desire nothing more than their own power and self-aggrandizement. Others claim to be on a journey, seeking for the elusive mystical experience most commonly called “The Flow”.

Long Description

There is an exclusive party. Everyone is invited, but only a select few are able to attend. It takes place everywhere, but nobody can tell you how to get there. Some people will hear the rhythm, and get there by just following their feet. Some people are taken by the hand and invited by regular attendees. The party doesn’t have a name, per se. Or rather, most people who go there have their own name for it which is shared by few others. Most people just call it “The Dancefloor”. The Dancefloor is not actually a physical place. It is a place where the Adept; people who channel their magic through dance can access, each through their own solo practice, from whatever dance floor is available to their physical body.
As for what you do there, well, obviously, you dance. That’s the basics. Maybe you are looking for someone whose spirit speaks to yours. Maybe it’s just for the rush. But some people come looking for more. Taking the center of the Dancefloor is an act of power. Dangerous, perhaps. Thrilling, absolutely. But sometimes, for adepts, necessary. Some might come to dance for the power to heal, to kill, to bind the heart of a lover, to break the spirit of a rival. Others set their sights higher; to craft rituals with the power to change the world, to reach across the gulf of years, or to bring back the forbidden magic of Disco.
Thing is, most people can’t hold the Center of the Dancefloor on their own. Not for very long, and not in a way that matters.

On Dancefloors will be a mostly non-verbal larp. Characters will be workshopped on day of from a set of shared prompts. Expect some quick-resolution lightweight mechanics for determining "control" of the dancefloor if it should become contentious, but which is not a required element of game play. Dancing, other other hand, most certainly is.

Inspirations for this game include Glamorous Nights, Sound and Fury: Lament, and The Divine Fleet.
