The 4th Annual Crown & Courtier Conference

by Elizabeth De Lyser

banner.png

Welcome to the 4th Annual Conference for the Crown and Courtiers! Enjoy workshops on Successful Questing, Eyelash Fluttering, Lute for Beginners, Handling Ominous Prophecies, and even an FAQ with the Traveling Troubadors! Princes, Princesses, Lords, Ladies, Minstrels, Jesters, Dancers, and Bards from all kingdoms welcome!

The 4th Annual Crown and Courtiers Conference is a light-hearted LARP that plays with tropes from fairy tales and ambiguously-set medieval-vibe stories and smashes all the best bits together into a corporate-style conference event.

Expect romance, breakout sessions, scandal, networking, and drama, as well as quests to quest on, scheduled promenade slots, curses to break, firm handshakes, engagements to make or break up, getting sloppy at the bar , and very dramatic swooning at the slightest indication swooning might be appropriate.

Players will be cast as a royal person or an entertainer of the court of some sort and attend relevant workshops for their role in Court. In the process, they are likely to encounter new friends, old rivals, and romantic flames; prophecies, curses, quests and more.

THIS GAME IS: an excuse to reuse old fancy costumes, a fun event to dress up for and dance, an example of absurdism, a parody of corporate "networking events", and fairly light-hearted,

THIS GAME IS NOT: social commentary on historical feudalism or monarchies, an upstairs-downstairs game, a game with win/lose conditions, or intended to be stressful.

WHO SHOULD I PLAY?

That depends what you want from this game~! :)

Crowns are people of royal lingeage of some sort -- generally a prince or a princess. They are subject to marry well, potentially someday rule, and fit into an expected social structure for high society and courtly life. They are expected to fit society's gender norms and be public figures.

Courtiers are people who interact with court life in some way -- generally minstrels, storytellers, dancers, advisors, clergy, or entertainers of some sort (or, at least, using that as their cover story). They are subject to needing to make a living and networking, but they are not as subject to gender norms or family obligations.

Both Crowns and Courtiers can expect drama and romance. :)

Questions to consider when deciding what to sign up as:

• How important/unimportant is gender expression to me?

• How much freedom do I want as a character?

• What existing medieval-era costumes do I already have that I could reuse?
