Long Description
Murder at Pemberley
The invitations were sent. The house and grounds are immaculate. And the “guests,” consisting of beloved family and friends as well as infuriating party crashers, have witnessed the vows. Many of those “guests,” invited and not, have made themselves at home in Pemberley’s guest rooms to enjoy the country air for a few extra days. A delightful weekend in the country, until someone turns up dead!
Murder at Pemberley is a murder mystery LARP inspired by the works of Jane Austen, PD James, Agatha Christie, etc. The tone is neither as silly as Clue nor as serious as a typical episode of Masterpiece Theatre. The game draws from the works of Austen and James as well as classic mystery tropes like blackmail, affairs of the heart (and body), personal rivalries, and red herrings. Expect some melodrama and be prepared to suspend some disbelief for the sake of the mystery.
Mechanics:
- The murder will have already taken place at the start of the game, and investigation of the crime will occur primarily through conversation, though some “clues” may be turned up in the form of item cards.
- Players will be expected to have read their character sheets (<7 pages) prior to the game. Feel free to bring notes.
- Familiarity with Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice is not required, but is definitely encouraged. (The 2005 movie version is only around 2 hours long.)
- A character survey will be sent once the game has enough players to run.
Other Details:
- This game is set during the Regency era at a grand estate in Derbyshire, England.
- Costuming is not required, but is welcomed.
Content Warnings:
- Discussion of at least one murder (i.e. murder weapon, time of death, motives) but no graphic details will be discussed.
- Substance abuse.
- Implied homophobia due to time period of setting (i.e. secret relationships).
- Possible discussion of war and its impact on civilians and military personnel.
- Anxiety.
