Echar Leña al Fuego
A fire breaks out just before the 1929 Barcelona International Expo. Was it a message from extreme anarchists, an attack by disgruntled foreign nationals, or a simple mistake? Spain's pre-Civil War political and social tensions are the backdrop for this social game of secrets, politics, and most importantly, architecture.
Long Description
A fire in the workers’ shanty town outside the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition site brings eight people together including architects and revolutionaries, land owners and displaced nobility. Each person has goals and most importantly, secrets of their own, which will be revealed before the evening is over. This game is a social Who-Dunnit set in the outskirts of historic Barcelona, written for 8 characters. There is no required knowledge, but a list of resources used to influence and inform the writing of this game will be provided.
Gameplay will consist of a closed room, powder-keg atmosphere with multiple mysteries to ponder and personal secrets to uncover. There will be tension between opposing ideas that will not be resolved during gameplay, because many of the issues facing the characters were real issues in Spain that were not easily resolved then, either.
Narrative themes within this game will include labor rights and the politics of anarcho-syndicalism in Spain prior to the Civil War, land use and hereditary property, the lasting effects of WW1 for veterans and international relations, architectural opinions on traditional vs modern styles, and struggles for freedom. Character backgrounds may include the loss of a loved one, family member, or child, fighting in WW1, being thwarted by misogyny, and facism.
